Tell us about yourself.
I am a Jack of all trades! I have played with android systems since the very first versions that came out. Mobile technologies excite me. I have had the privilege of working for large companies but a few years back I entered the Startup scene and haven’t left since.
Why TopUp Mama?
I knew I wanted to be a part of TopUp Mama as soon as Njavwa and I spoke. I am aligned with the mission to increase restaurants’ contribution to Africa’s GDP and I’ll say the journey has been quite fulfilling so far.
What does a typical work week at TopUp Mama look like for you?
As a mobile app engineer, I am singularly responsible for developing the mobile app. I interact with the Product Manager and Quality Assurance engineer as they inform a large part of my work.
We work in two-week sprints where the Product Manager shares projects and specific tasks to be achieved during the sprint. I receive feature requests and API points from back-end developers after which I get started.
After building features, I push them out to Quality Assurance Engineer to test them out and after receiving feedback, I address all changes before launch/communication to end users.
When you are not working, what do you do?
I used to be outdoorsy and then took a break but I am always looking for opportunities to take time away from my screen. Like when I visited Nairobi, I enjoyed the hike to Ngong’ Hills.
What do you never miss in your work bag?
My role requires me to be ahead of the team and the customers by identifying challenges on the app way before the users notice them. Thus, I always have my phone with me. I also never leave my laptop behind - that’s where all the heavy lifting happens!
How do you keep your engineering skills current?
I recently joined a professional group of Developers like myself where trends in the industry and other resourceful material are shared. I also attend tech events and conferences. I also read a lot of publications, I prefer text over video.
What’s your favorite feature on the recently launched TopUp Mama app?
I love the dynamics it brings - Customers can check their order status, allowing for flexibility on the customer’s side.
Seeing that you work remotely, how do you manage your time for a healthy work-life balance?
Time is such a priced commodity for Tech professionals. Luckily, we work in cycles. The workload can be quite high at the development stage but when the product is ready we are left doing maintenance giving plenty of time for relaxation.
What’s your favorite thing about working with the team at TopUp Mama?
The aligned vision!
Favorite African Restaurant?
Mmmh - Commint Buka in Lagos!
Amala (yam/plantain flour) and Abula (Ewedu, ọbẹ̀ ata, and Gbegiri - bean soup)
You had the opportunity to travel to Nairobi earlier this year - what did you like about the city?
The hike to Ngong Hills was exciting! The views were breathtaking. I also like that the people of Nairobi are polite, funny, and chill.
Over 3000+ restaurants use Topup Mama to purchase supplies, access credit and grow.
